'Game of Thrones' is still the world's most popular illegal download, by far

Here's a nerdy statistic for you Game of Thrones fans: There are more illegal downloads of the show every week than there are people in King's Landing

That's according to piracy monitoring service Irdeto, which monitored illegal TV downloads for two months earlier this year, and found GoT to be increasingly popular. Some 116,000 copies of the show were downloaded each day on average, or 812,000 in any given week. (King's Landing, according to the George R.R. Martin books, has a mere 500,000 souls.)

That means Game of Thrones, which returns to our screens on Sunday, retains its title as the most popular illegally downloaded show in the world. Not only did Irdeto find it in the same position in a similar study last year, but rival piracy tracking firm Excipio got the same results when it examined BitTorrent downloads in 2013 and 2014 for Variety .
