SAN FRANCISCO — A high-profile sex discrimination trial against a premiere venture capital firm reached a pivotal moment in San Francisco Superior Court Monday when the accuser Ellen Pao took the stand to testify against her former employer.

Pao, a former junior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, is seeking $16 million from the firm in backpay and future wage losses. She claims the firm repeatedly denied her deserved promotions because of her gender and that a colleague with whom she had a brief relationship tormented her at work for several years.
