Nintendo slips console news into its mobile announcement, codenamed NX

While Nintendo spent the majority of its unexpected Tuesday announcement talking about plans to expand into mobile gaming, it doesn't plan to leave console-building behind


Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced the company was working on a new console, codenamed "NX," in his Tuesday address in Japan. He declined to give any further details, such as whether the NX would be a console or handheld product, instead using the announcement as a sign Nintendo wasn't diverging too far from its roots.



"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices but it is not because we have lost passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems," Iwata said. "On the contrary, now that we have decided how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than ever before."
