Hollywood's Drones Turned Loose for Shooting Film and TV

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood, you are now free to move about U.S. airspace — with your drones.

Six entertainment production companies have been granted regulatory exemptions to use drones in domestic airspace, the first step to allowing the film and TV industry widespread use of unmanned aircraft systems for filming purposes, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced Thursday.

What that means: Those six companies can fly their drones without having to break through time- and energy-consuming red tape to address pesky things like general flight rules, pilot certificate requirements, manuals, maintenance and equipment mandates. Read more...
