The next Apple TV likely won't support 4K video

Apple might be planning a major update to its Apple TV set-top box later this year, but according to a new report, the new device won't include support for 4K content. At least, not initially.

The report, from John Paczkowski at BuzzFeed, cites "sources in a position to know," who say that "4K is great, but it's still in its infancy."

The lack of 4K support might come as a surprise to some, but it seems to make perfect sense. It's certainly possible that any chipset Apple puts in its next Apple TV could support 4K video, Apple rarely leads the way in supporting higher-resolution content before mainstream adoption exists.
