Google and Mattel gives the View-Master a virtual reality overhaul

NEW YORK — The iconic View-Master toy from the early 1900s is getting a massive overhaul with the help of Google and virtual reality technology.

Mattel’s new View-Master looks more like an Oculus Rift headset than the original, which launched 75 years ago. The device, which will debut this fall for $30, works with various smartphones; users must slide in their mobile device, and pair it with a corresponding app. The View-Master uses Google's virtual reality cardboard technology, and enables users to move their head from side to side to see different scenes as if they are actually there.
