As winter sets in across the Middle East, a funding crisis is spelling disaster for the millions of Syrian and Iraqi refugees scattered across the region.

The United Nations announced that due to lack of funding, the World Food Programme (WFP) voucher program that feeds 1.7 million Syrian refugees would be suspended. The critical program provided refugees with vouchers to purchase goods from local stores, injecting $800 million into the economies of their host countries. The U.Nsaid in a statement on Monday that without the WFP, "many families will go hungry."
