Police chief addresses the media after night of riots, violence
2:41 AM EST / Jenni Ryall
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar and Captain Ron Johnson of the State Highway Patrol addressed the media at 1:30 AM local time. "I'm disappointed in this evening... I didn't see a lot of peaceful protests out there tonight," Belmar said.
Both officers said they did not believe the police were under-prepared but it would have taken 10,000 officers to counteract people who are "intent on just destroying a community." The officers said the riots were worse than what they had witnessed in August, after the shooting death of Michael Brown, and they were disappointed by the extent of the damage.
"Our community is going to have take responsibility for what happened tonight," Johnson admitted.
Belmar confirmed 29 people have been arrested and countless objects confiscated. An elderly man was also run over with his vehicle after being carjacked in the Ferguson area. "I didn't foresee an evening like this, I'll be honest with you," he said.
