Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years in Jail for Killing His Girlfriend

South African double-amuptee Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced on Tuesday to a maximum of five years imprisonment for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.


Judge Thokozile Masipa asked Pistorius to stand for the sentence at the climax of the months-long trial involving one of the world's most recognizable athletes and his Valentine's Day shooting of his girlfriend.


Masipa had a range of options for Pistorius' punishment after convicting the double-amputee athlete of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in Steenkamp's 2013 shooting death, but acquitting him of murder. Masipa could have issued a suspended sentence and a fine, meaning Pistorius would not go to jail. She could order him to go under house arrest, or she could send him to prison for up to 15 years.
