Tensions spiked early Wednesday morning local time in Hong Kong as hundreds of police clashed with pro-democracy protesters as authorities tried to clear a tunnel outside government headquarters, according to news reports


Police used pepper spray and tussled with demonstrators in what has been described as the high point of violence since protests started nearly two weeks ago


Although the protesters, whose movement has been dubbed Occupy Central and the Umbrella Revolution, faced pepper spray and tear gas at the hands of police in the early days of their demonstrations, their organization has been generally peaceful lately—minus confrontations with Hong Kong residents tired of the inconvenience.
