Death of Endangered Northern White Rhino Puts Subspecies on Brink of Extinction
The death of a northern white rhinoceros has left the subspecies on the brink of extinction.
Suni, a 34-year-old rhino, was found dead on Friday at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nairobi, Kenya. Only six other northern white rhinos remain alive, with Suni having been one of only two males capable of breeding.
The conservancy announced Suni's death in a posting on its website, noting that it believes the rhino's death was due to natural causes and not poaching
"Consequently, the species now stands at the brink of complete extinction, a sorry testament to the greed of the human race," Ol Pejeta Conservancy wrote. "We will continue to do what we can to work with the remaining three animals on Ol Pejeta in the hope that our efforts will one day result in the successful birth of a northern white rhino calf."
