Court Strikes Down Gay Marriage Bans in Nevada and Idaho
One day after the Supreme Court refused to hear appeals in gay marriage cases, effectively legalizing same-sex marriage in 11 more states, a federal appeals court on Tuesday also struck down bans on gay marriage in Nevada and Idaho.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco was expected to side with gay marriage proponents.
With same-sex marriage bans thrown out in Idaho and Nevada, and the 9th Circuit's ruling expected to apply in Alaska, Arizona and Montana, a total of 35 states and the District of Columbia will soon permit the unions. The American public's rapid shift in perspective on gay marriage has been matched by a quick succession of rulings after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act last year.
