Apple Patent Offers In-Depth Look at Apple Pay's NFC Technology

Apple filed for a patent related to near-field communication technology (NFC) on Thursday, and though it doesn't mention Apple Pay by name, the document offers an in-depth look at how the mobile payment platform may work

Explained simply, NFC is how you will use Apple Pay to pay for transactions by tapping your iPhone at a payment terminal. The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published the application on Thursday, which was uncovered by AppleInsider
