How naïve we were

"Rupert Murdoch will never again be a force in British politics," everyone said three years ago as the phone-hacking scandal was fully exposed. Suddenly the man who'd been a force in political affairs in the United Kingdom since the late 1960s, was shamed into closing down his News of the World newspaper. And party leaders, who only weeks before had happily been drinking Murdoch's champagne — David Cameron and Ed Miliband — suddenly shunned him.
