Los Angeles to Warn Airbnb Hosts About Hotel Taxes

Los Angeles wants its cut of the money residents are making by renting out rooms and apartments on websites like Airbnb. At a city council meeting on Monday, officials directed staff to contact hosts through the website to warn them of their tax responsibility.
Short-term rentals in the city are subject to a transient occupancy tax aimed at hotels. Funds from the tax go to the city's general fund and pay for police, infrastructure and other services.
Messaging hosts who may owe taxes is the solution the council came up with in lieu of being able to identify exact addresses.
