Very Important Analysis of the Monkey Embroiled in the Wikimedia Copyright Controversy

A Celebes crested macaque became one of the most famous faces in the world on Wednesday.


By now, you've heard about the heated copyright dispute between a photographer, who owned the camera that held a picture of the monkey, and the Wikimedia Foundation, the U.S.-based organization that owns Wikipedia. So we spoke with Nancy Hawkes, the general curator of the Woodland Park Zoo (home to lion-tailed macaques) in Seattle, Washington, to learn more about this particular species of monkey, the Celebes crested macaque.



During a trip that British photographer David Slater took through the jungles of the Indonesian island Sulawesi in 2011, the macaque (pictured below) stole Slater's camera and took a selfie. Read more...
