Senior Advisor to Rebel Commander Confirms Extrajudicial Executions in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine – A senior aide to the commander of Russian-backed insurgents in eastern Ukraine confirmed on Saturday that his group has carried out extrajudicial executions “to prevent chaos” in the region.



Igor Druz, chief of ideology for the insurgents and advisor to the self-proclaimed defense minister of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic Igor Strelkov, told the BBC in an interview in Donetsk that “executions” send a strong signal to their fighters





“On several occasions, in a state of emergency, we have carried out executions by shooting to prevent chaos. As a result, our troops, the ones who have pulled out of Sloviansk, are highly disciplined,” Druz said, referring to the former stronghold from which the insurgents retreated on July 5, after enduring days of heavy shelling by Ukrainian forces.



In his interview with the BBC, Druz outlined his vision for the “state of Novorossia,” referring to the territory the separatists hope to build there. Translated as “New Russia,” it is also a term that has been used by Russian President Vladimir Putin to describe the region. Read more...
