SeaWorld Announces New Killer Whale Enclosures
SeaWorld wants you to know it's changing its ways.
The company announced on Friday that it plans to build "new, first-of-its-kind killer whale environments," in addition to funding programs that protect oceans and killer whales in the wild. The news comes just two days after shares of SeaWorld's parent company, SeaWorld Entertainment Inc., fell 30%. The company's stock closed at $18 on Thursday, the lowest price since it went public in April 2013.
Business for SeaWorld, which is based in Orlando, Florida, has been hurt by negative publicity surrounding its treatment of killer whales. Although the company's management had previously blamed other factors for declining attendance, it acknowledged in a press release to investors issued Wednesday that the publicity affected its bottom line.
