American Journalist Freed in Syria After Being Held Captive for Two Years
Peter Theo Curtis, an American journalist, has been freed in Syria after nearly two years of being held captive. He had been abducted in Turkey near the Syrian border in October 2012.
"Particularly after a week marked by unspeakable tragedy, we are all relieved and grateful knowing that Theo Curtis is coming home after so much time held in the clutches of Jabhat Al-Nusrah," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement. "For two years, this young American has been separated from his family."
Al Jazeera, which broke the news, reported that Curtis was freed with help from Qatar, and handed over to United Nations representatives. Kerry noted in his statement that the U.S. reached out to "more than two dozen countries asking for urgent help" on the matter. Read more...
